Abstract
Uncontrolled ascites due to malignant involvement of the liver or the peritoneum is a debilitating condition that results in a significant impairment of quality of life. In this combined physician-nurse presentation, the presenters reviewed the pathophysiology of ascites, treatment options for ascites including the placement of an external drainage catheter (tunneled or nontunneled) and a peritoneovenous shunt, rationales for specific drainage approaches, techniques for device placement, and nursing interventions, including patient education. The goals of the presentation were to improve the understanding of ascites and its treatment and to illustrate how nurses can contribute to optimizing patient outcomes.
