Abstract
The ascending reticular activating system (ARAS) is a network of neurons extending from the rostral brainstem tegmentum through the thalamus to the cerebral cortex; there is a separate ARAS projection to the hypothalamus. The ARAS is responsible for the behavioral arousal and maintenance of wakefulness and also plays a role in attentional mechanisms. The system involves several neurotransmitter systems and should no longer be thought of as a homogenous, loosely connected group of neurons.
