Abstract

On the basis of previously unpublished archival records, this article compares the interior decorations of houses of the Spanish merchant community in Antwerp with those of the general population. It approaches this subject not only from a pure ‘art historical’ but also from a social and economic historical perspective and stresses the importance of the Spanish migration to Antwerp, the power of the Spanish as a group and their merging with Flemish culture in the XVIth century.
