Abstract
The treatment of cardiovascular diseases relies on the use of diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices. These medical devices are composed of artificial and natural biomaterials. Plastics are an important part of the artificial biomaterials used in medical devices. This part of the text concentrates on the use of plastic materials in various cardiovascular medical devices. Catheters are important devices used for many purposes; it could be to diagnose a cardiovascular condition in greater detail, to perform a procedure, or to deliver a therapeutic device. The details of the construction of a catheter from its physical dimensions to the method of manufacture are covered in different sections of this part. Devices that allow treatment of various cardiovascular diseases, such as heart valve malfunction, cardiac arrhythmia, heart ventricular failure, artery diseases, and aneurysms are addressed in Part III. Devices that allow effective closure are also covered.
