Abstract
The possibilities of the low energy inert gas ion bombardment in abnormal glowing discharge conditions for the etching of metallographic specimens of the pure metals Al, Zn, Cu and their alloys are investigated. By suitable combination of the ion etching parameters different degrees of surface erosion for the various microstructural components could be achieved. This guarantees perfectly revealed microstructures without deformed layer. Appropriate ion etching conditions are established for the investigated metals and alloys
