Abstract

Primitive societies thought that the earth was full of numerous both good and bad beings and together with this idea they believed that all the living or non-living objects on the earth were animated by the spirits. In a historical process, this belief led to the forming of man-faced god sculptures (Cults of the Gods) which carry artistic aesthetic. From that day forward, people worshipped them in a different belief system according to which the gods possess man features (eating, drinking, fighting, and envying). Limitless needs which are peculiar to man caused the emergence of numerous god beliefs. In other words, it can be stated that cults of the gods occurred as a kind of power under which man could shelter when felt helpless against the hugeness of nature. This paper, which is about the cults of the god in Kelkit Valley, has been completed by evaluating the findings in museums. Key Words: Kelkit Valley, Pontos, Cults of the gods, Religion and Faith.
