Abstract

Society has witnessed an intense technological advance since the Industrial Revolution, which increased in the late 1990s and early 2000s and has remained at high levels. This technological advance has accentuated the dependence and demanded, more and more, generation of electric energy. This paper highlights the importance of the role of higher education institutions (HEIs), as educators of environmentally conscious citizens for the rational use of natural resources and especially for electric energy. The analysis of the behavior of the use of electric energy, at the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU) campus Santa Monica, was performed based on the records of demand and consumption. In this work, data from the historical series were used for peak hour power demand (HP), off-peak time (HFP), consumption in HP and HFP in the period from January 2004 to December 2017 and also the series of difference between contracted and measured demand in HP and HFP, this between January 2008 and December 2017. The analysis was based on the time series methodology. Energy efficiency, linked to the reduction of consumption, becomes relevant in two aspects: i) associated with the conservation of environmental resources and; ii) linked to issues inherent to management, such as improving the quality of spending on reducing costs and waste.
