Abstract

The polymerization of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS), catalysed by KOH, has been investigated in the presence of dispersed oxides. It has been established that all the oxides exert an inhibiting effect on the anionic polymerization, but to different extents depending on the acid-base properties of their surfaces. Zinc. and cobalt oxides have hardly any effect on the polymerization of OMCTS. The smallest value of monomer conversion and polymer molecular mass were recorded in the presence of the strongly acidic oxides of aluminium and silicon. An increase in the polymer yield and molecular mass is characteristic of all the systems as the temperature of treatment of the oxides is raised. Termination of the polymer chain occurs principally at Brönsted acidic centres.
