Abstract
A new method is presented for the calculation of Mössbauer line shapes of hyperfine split nuclei. Instead of solving explicitly the hyperfine Hamiltonian for its eigenvalues and eigenvectors this method uses a superoperator formalism to yield closed form expressions for the Mössbauer line shape in the presence of magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole hyperfine interactions. The advantage of this method over the conventional one lies in the fact that averages over hyperfine field orientations may be calculated analytically. This is demonstrated for the case of 57Fe with randomly oriented electric field gradients in a uniform oriented magnetic field.
