Abstract

Objective To study the pathogen of ventilator associated pneumonia(VAP) tract infection in patients receiving mechanical ventilation in intensive care unit(ICU) and the drug resistance of pathogens. Methods The pathogens and their drug resistance of VAP in 96 patients (from Jan. 2006 to Dec. 2007) receiving mechanical ventilation in the ICU were investigated. Results 161 strains of pathogens were isolated by bacterial culture and identified. The ratio of the gram-negative bacteria to total bacteria isolated was 64.6% (104 strains) and that of the gram-positive bacteria and the fungi were 19.9% (32 strains) and 15.5% (25 strains) respectively. The results showed mtiltiple drug-resistance of the strains. Conclusions Gram-negative bacteria are the majority of the pathogens from the patients receiving mechanical ventilation of VAP tract infection in ICU. The pathogens show multiple drug-resistance in drug sensitive test. It is suggested that great attention should be paid to the infections in patients receiving mechanical ventilation in ICU along with the cultivation and surveilance of pathogen so as to use antimicrobial agents rationally during the clinical therapy. Key words: Intensive care unit; Mechanical ventilation; Lower respiratory tract infection; Pathogen; Drug resistance
