Abstract

In about 1960 two scientific developments occurred which have a direct bearing on this topic. One was the demonstration of the first laser (1) whose impact on this topic will be discussed later. The other was the scientific development in the late 50’s and the commercial availability in the early 60’s of the spark source mass spectrometer (SSMS). Actually the SSMS was first demonstrated back in 1935 by A. J. Dempster (2,3). Basically the development of SSMS as an analytical tool was a response to the great surge in solid state and high purity metallurgy accurring in the 1950’s.
