Abstract
Based on the structure of unified power flow controller (UPFC) device, this paper aims to analysis the operation characteristics of series transformer and develops a design case. Operation characteristics analysis consider several factors including BIL insulation level, resistance to short-circuit, harmonic suppression, winding leakage reactance parameters and winding temperature rise. To take account of the feasibility of applying shell-type transformer, a simple example is developed based upon a set of parameters, with capacity 50MVA and line voltage 220kV.
