Abstract

This paper describes an optimization procedure for seismic design of steel frames for multi-performance and multi-hazard levels under the different performance objectives. The optimization models and optimization techniques are incorporated in the seismic design procedure. An estimation method is developed to evaluate the residual inter-story drifts of steel frames under multi-hazard levels for the seismic design procedure. The estimation method just needs to perform nonlinear static analysis until all the inter stories yield and all residual inter-story drifts can be achieved. The design procedures of a three-story steel frame for multi-performance and multi-hazard levels under the different performance objectives are demonstrated to elucidate the proposed optimization procedure.
