Abstract

OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing), which is a multi-carrier modulation scheme, has been utilized in various scenes such as terrestrial digital broadcasting and wireless LAN because of its high transmission efficiency, high spectral efficiency and so on. However, when PAPR (Peak to Average Power Ratio)is large, problems such as signal quality degradation, increase in cost of transmitter etc. will occur. Solving this problem is extremely important especially for mobile communication. In order to solve this problem, peak power is needed to be suppressed so that the PAPR will be reduced as much as possible. In this study, we performed an experiment on simple PAPR reduction method of clipping, with the aim of constructing the simulation environment of OFDM modulation/demodulation on software and examining PAPR reduction. In the experiments, we examined how much transmission quality can be maintained while reducing PAPR by measuring PAPR and BER (Bit Error Rate)characteristics. The simulation results showed that while the PAPR characteristic were improved by clipping method, the BER characteristic were deteriorated. Therefore, we found that clipping method is effective for PAPR reduction but it increases the BER, which is consistent with the results of the previous research [1], which in turn verifies the simulation accuracy. So far we experimented about a PAPR reduction with clipping method by constructing the OFDM modulation/demodulation simulation environment and verified the accuracy of the simulation. However, we found the clipping method to be insufficient for our goal as it increses the BER. In the future, we will study other PAPR reduction methods, without increasing BER.
