Abstract

The lineage of applied materials science is always in demand for light weight and highly performing materials. Such materials would find their applications in aircraft, structural, non-structural and automobile industries, etc. The present study aims at investigating the wear and corrosion behavior of Al-Based 6082 metal matrix composites (AMMCs) reinforced with graphite particles by pin-on-disc configuration. AMMCs were fabricated with three different weight fractions of graphite particles ranging from 5 to10% by using this stir-casting method. The friction coefficients and volumetric wear rates were continuously evaluated under uniform load of 10 N and sliding velocity of 0.5 m/s for the constant sliding distance of 300 m. Micro structural characterization was carried out by using trinocular microscope. Prepared composite was evaluated for wear, corrosion and hardness test as per ASTM standards 6082 aluminium alloy is an alloy in the wrought aluminium –magnesium –silicon family. It is one of the more popular alloys in its series, although it is not strongly feature in ASTM. This investigation reveals that wear, corrosion, micro-structural and hardness analysis of base alloy aluminium 6082 reinforced with different compositions of 5, 10 and 15 %.
