Abstract

Abstract An analysis of the agricultural policies introduced in the Slovak Republic shows an increasing willingness of the government to implement economic measures resulting in the weakening of economic pressure towards an improvement of international competitiveness of agriculture. The Policy Analysis Matrix is used as a quantitative method. The analysis focuses on the 14 main sectors of agriculture and explicitly takes into account the linkage with the processing sector. Moreover, regional diversity of Slovak agriculture (West‐, Middle‐ and East‐Slovakia) and the different types of firms in a processing industry (their technical efficiency level) are accounted for. The study shows a strong diversification in the levels of protection and the implicit net taxation imposed on agricultural producers in different farming sectors in Slovakia.
