Abstract
In the back analysis of a 2-dimensional FEM elastic problem, the fuzzy inference technique is applied to estimate the unknown physical constants such as the Poissons' ratio or the elastic modulus. If the FEM problem deals with the modellike ground layers, the unknown constants are likely to spread along the layer boundaries. In this case, the fuzzy inference technique is used to find the boundaries roughly, and the genetic algorithm (GA) is used together in the analysis to identify the elements with unknown constants along the boundary, precisely. It is simple and advantageous to use the fuzzy inference together with GA in the back analysis, compared with the ordinary analysis that solves the back analysis problem as a minimization problem using a nonlinear programming technique such as the steepest descendent method or conjugate gradient method.
