Abstract

At its December meeting, the AGU Executive Committee recommended that AGU apply for membership in the American Institute of Physics (AIP). The Council approved this action and a formal application was submitted to AIP in February. At its March 16 meeting, the AIP Governing Board unanimously recommended to its member societies that AGU become a member of the Institute. This is the first step in a year‐long process. Now the councils of each of the AIP member societies, including the American Physical Society, the American Astronomical Society, the Optical Society of America, the American Association of Physics Teachers, and five others, must each approve AGU membership in the Institute. Finally, the AIP Corporation must formally accept those votes to effect the new membership.
