Abstract

The origin, development and future of the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) and its impact on the dairy sector are outlined in this article. Major milestones are discussed including the original price support scheme of 1968 linked to the Treaty of Rome principles, the milk quota scheme in place between 1984 and 2015, Agenda 2000, CAP Reform (Mid-Term Review) 2003, the CAP Health Check 2008 and CAP Reform 2013. The future of the EU dairy sector is discussed, and the likely impacts of the EU Green Deal, including the “Farm to Fork” strategy, and the withdrawal of the UK from the EU are explored.
