Abstract

This chapter reviews the roles of aggregate capacity planning in agile manufacturing. By reviewing the relationship among aggregate capacity planning, production line design/redesign and manufacturing agility, it is suggested that aggregate capacity planning, production line design/redesign, and disaggregate decision problems be integrated in flexible manufacturing environment to realize better customer responsiveness and business goals. The chapter also presents models of the suggested integration for electronic industry and automobile manufacturing industry. Cases from electronic industry are also described to show the integration process, in which a model of scenario-based line capacity expansion problem for printed wiring board (PWB) assembly systems at the aggregate level is developed. The model brings together the bill of components of product families and machine flexibility; thus, manufacturing flexibility and customer response can be explicitly considered in the model.
