Abstract

Towards further development of construction engineering, a new technical research centre “Techno Station” was constructed in a suburb of Tokyo and completed in September 2010.The building incorporates the following three advanced structural technologies.First, an active base isolation system using an absolute vibration control technology is applied to a real full-scale building for the first time in the world. The absolute vibration control is an active vibration control method for base isolated structures to stay in the absolute space and to have vibration-free environment, by applying control forces through actuators during earthquakes. This control includes feed forward control, which applies counter force of the input ground motion and feedback control, which adds absolute damping to the structural system.Secondly, ultra high strength concrete filled steel tubes (steel: 780 MPa, concrete: 160 MPa) are utilized for the main columns. In combination with the active isolation system, the diameter of the columns is reduced from 800 mm, which is derived from a conventional design approach, to 500 mm.Finally, ultra high strength fibre-reinforced mortar (170 MPa) is utilized for indoor bridges. Using the advantage of no bar arrangement, the depth of the bridges is kept to 335 mm.These three advanced technologies provide superior seismic performance without losing freedom of planning.
