Abstract

The design of the cathode in an aluminium reduction cell was investigated by computer simulation aiming at a reduction of the energy consumption. In the thermoelectric model, the side crust was treated as a moving boundary. A method was developed to calculate the side crust geometry for pots, and even for those with an efficient insulation. Heat insulating materials were interposed between the cathode block and the side wall to reduce the heat emission from the cell, and to improve the thermal characteristics of the cathode.
