Abstract
Family leisure is held in high esteem as an important and essential component of family life. This research examines family travelers' leisure activity participation patterns and the influence of family composition. Based on data from rural Southern Indiana, the study has identified four rural activity groups of family travelers, which are “Gamers,” “Campers,” “Rural heritage trekkers,” and “Social visitors.” Comparisons of the clusters across family composition coupled with correspondence analysis of family composition's association with various travel activities have revealed significant influence of family composition on family travelers' rural activity participation behavior. This study extends rural tourism research to one of its major market—the family travelers. The results of this research can potentially lend valuable practical implications for rural tourism development.
