Abstract

Acetylene terminated phenylquinoxline oligomer were prepared by the condensation of-ethynylphenoxybenzil with o-diamino end-capped phenylquinoxaline oligomers and also by the reaction of 4-acetylphenoxybenzil with an o-diamino end-capped phenyquinoxaline oligomer, followed by treating the acetyl end-capped oligomer with the Vilsmeier reagent and subsequent cleavage of the β-chlorocinnamaldehyde with base. The acetylene terminated phenylquinoxaline oligomers were thermally polymerized and characterized. In addition, a model compound, 2-[4-[4-ethynylphenoxy)phenylene]-3-phenylquinoxaline, was prepared and studies were conducted to determine the minimum temperature for reaction of the acetylene group, the effect of higher temperature upon the product, and the identity of the major component In the thermally induced reaction product.
