Abstract

Objetive Description of common, epidemiological, clinical and microbiological characteristics from those patients who have been diagnosed of uni or bilateral tuboovarian abscess. Patients and method An observational study which takes place from april 1997-april 2002 in the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ward of the Maternal Hospital in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Patients admitted into the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ward with a diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease are included in this review if they have been diagnosed “intraoperatory” of uni or bilateral tuboovarian abscess. Results 278 patients are attended with the diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease. 31.65% require surgical intervention and in 15.1% tuboovarian abscess are diagnosed. The epidemiological characteristics most frecuently seen are women with 32-33 years of age, sexually active, with a low socio-economic status, smoker and with 1-3 childs. Abdominal pain associated to fever and leucocitosis over 10.000, are common. Laparoscopy is the surgical technique, the left tubo-ovarian abscess is the most frecuently diagnosed. The surgical procedures more carried out are the bilateral salpinguectomy and the unilateral anexectomy. Hospital stay is prolonged. The microorganisms more isolated are the aerobic gram-negative bacillus. Conclusions Pelvic inflammatory disease causes frecuently surgical operations. Laparoscopy is the elected surgical technique. Hospital stay is prolonged. In few cases, Chlamydia trachomatis is identified as the pathogen agent. The microorganisms more isolated are the aerobic gram-negative bacillus.
