Abstract

The symmetry properties of the crystal field completely determines the polarization. Thermal vibrations in crystals are generally neither longitudinal nor transverse. The purpose of the paper is to discuss in the general case of polyatomic crystals the existence of pure longitudinal and pure transverse modes and to present in a tabular form the polarization of the atomic vibrations corresponding to a given wave vector.
