Abstract

Hybrid composites have proved to be a potential material attracting large scale attention for applications such as in construction, automobiles, aerospace and locomotives. In this article, a treatise on the hybrid composites types, their diversity of properties, the effect of various fibre surface treatments on mechanical properties of natural fibres and possible natural and synthetic fibre combinations for a variety of applications is presented. The mechanical characterization (tensile, flexural and impact) of different combinations of natural and synthetic fibres in thermoplastic or thermoset polymer matrices along with the critical issues is also showcased. Although the importance of hybrid composites, mechanical properties and their applications are already available in the literature, enhancing damage tolerance and impact resistance has not been duly focused by the research community.
