Abstract
A theoretical investigation has been made to determine the exact role which the internal series resistance and the surface layer (p or n layer) resistance play in determining the conversion efficiency in solar energy converters using p-n junction photovoltaic cells. An equivalent circuit of the photovoltaic solar cell which is represented by a network consisting of a large number of current sources interconnected through series resistors, simulating the effect of sheet resistance of the surface layer, is assumed. Two models of photovoltaic cells have been analysed; in one, only the sheet resistance has been considered, neglecting the internal resistance (Case I), and in the other, some internal resistance has also been assumed (Case II). The differential equations in the above analysis have been solved making certain approximations, which have been shown to be quite valid. Graphs showing the relationships between the power developed and the various parameters are given.
