Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop the grammar instructional model that both teacher and leaner can jointly participate. For this purpose, the study applied and analyzed socratic method, that teacher and leaner’s conversation is the main focus, in Korean grammar class. The problem of this method is higher portion of teacher’s conversation than leaner’s. Socratic method is not effective way to improvement. Because the aim of improving grammar class is the encouraging learner’s participation. Thus, we constructed a model of a discussion and debate grammar class that combines Havruta method which is the discussion method of the Jewish family members with the Socratic Method. The key feature of this discussion and debate grammar instructional model is that the instructor and the learner are both actively participating in the grammar class. The introductory part of the class is based on the teacher''s centered method of responding to the learner’s questions, and the teacher turns to the learner centered havruta discussion and debate class by asking all learners about common topics related to their learning contents. Through havruta lesson, learners go through a process of partner discussion-debate, group discussion, and presentation. In the final part of the lesson, the teacher and learners jointly participate in the class by teacher’s summarizing of group presentation. According to Seo Dong-eun(2013: 188), ‘In order to expand knowledge, dialogue must inevitably take place and must be stimulated by new ideas with the contrary idea.’ The goal of the grammar class in college is to expand the knowledge of grammar by the teacher who knows more than leaners. To achieve this goal, we must constantly stimulate our thinking through dialogue.
