Abstract

Up until the present time, there has been little research devoted to applying a time‐dependent parabolic model to describe wave breaking and wide‐angle wave incidence. The purpose of this paper is to extend the applicability range of the time‐dependent parabolic equation model for both improving the radiation boundary conditions, and including an energy dissipation term in the mild‐slope equation. The wave breaking and energy dissipation model was examined using experimental data. The comparison indicates that the proposed model can adequately predict the behavior of wave breaking and energy dissipation in the surf zone. The computational results also show that the proposed model may improve the conventional treatment of the radiation boundary conditions for wide‐angle wave incidence.
