Abstract

To establish the mechanism of chemical transformation of a series of copolymers of acrylonitrile with N-methylolacrylamide during thermo-oxidative degradation at 140 and 180°, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy was used. It was shown that in this process, polyconjugated systems (PCS) are formed from the nitrile units. The kinetics of PCS formation in polymers of different composition were compared. The introduction of methylol amide units into the polymer chain affects the kinetics of PCS formation, also their length. The presence of the second component results in the formation of a 3-dimensional covalent network during thermal treatment.
