Abstract

Operations research may be interpreted in a broad sense as the use of the scientific method to solve management problems, or in a narrower sense as the application of mathematical programming techniques to management. In this bibliography, the broad interpretation is assumed. In general, the literature items selected employ or discuss the scientific method as it is applied to problems of library management. The references are roughly grouped into four categories: General, Mathematical Programming, Modeling, and Systems Analysis. This bibliography excludes numerous documents which employ mathematical approaches not in the context of the scientific method, statistical studies, cost analysis of library operations, and literature concerned with operational problems of documentation. The bibliography covers approximately a fifteenyear period ending 1970. The compilation of this bibliography was assited by Mr. T. C. Ponder, graduate research assistant in the School of Information and Computer Science, Georgia Institute of Technology, under grant GN-655 by the National Science Foundation.
