Abstract

Reluctance machines (RM) have desirable features including low rotor and no-load rotational losses. In this paper, a new type of RM is introduced, namely the asymmetrical RM. This machine has higher torque density than a conventional RM and is useful in situations where low rotor and no-load rotational losses are desirable. A design model for the new type of machine is presented and validated using finite-element analysis. The machine is compared to other machine types by comparing Pareto-optimal fronts of loss versus electromagnetic mass for a given torque.
