Abstract

Luteolin (3′,4′,5,7-tetrahydroxy flavone) is a flavonoid belonging to the subgroup of flavone, it is a naturally occurring compound in its glycosylated form, and exists in many types of plants including fruits, vegetables, and medicinal herbs. It has been suggested in preclinical studies that flavones possesses a variety of pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer activities. Like other flavones, it has been seen that plants rich in luteolin have been used in traditional medicine for treating various diseases. The purpose of this article is to systematically explain different aspects of luteolin with respect to its biosynthesis, total chemical synthesis, structure activity relationship and the aspects of the structure making it an effective pharmacological agent, it’s pharmacokinetic aspects and its pharmacological and therapeutic activity on the human body. Here pharmacological effects of luteolin is an important aspect because of its ability to inhibit angiogenesis, to induce apoptosis, to prevent carcinogenesis in animal models thereby showing chemo-preventive and chemotherapeutic potential, show antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory activity, anti-allergic effect, antispasmodic activity, anti-ulcer, anti-ageing , whitening activity , activity to mitigate psoriasis as well as have prominent neuroprotective effects.
