Abstract
This article is an excerpt from a master's thesis on teaching sociology in the female prison system. Brazil's incarceration policy makes the country third in the world in terms of the number of prisoners. In addition to the well-known difficulty of establishing sociology in Brazilian education, other elements must be considered when approaching the teaching of sociology in an environment as peculiar as that of a prison. Documentary gaps and the lack of targeted policies are part of the questioning of the importance or otherwise of education for people deprived of their liberty. The issue of work in prisons is an insurmountable need, because overcrowding, alarming numbers of illnesses, the presence of criminal factions, and the very situation of social vulnerability, make it difficult to achieve the goal of resocialization. In this context, the teaching of sociology becomes a challenge, because the problems that the subject studies encounter various barriers within an institution that has oppression as a 'necessary' conduct in its ideological base.
