Abstract
This paper deals with a developed pulse-width modulation technique for a Z-source three-level NPC inverter. This technique overcomes the limitation of the boost capability of the Z-source NPC inverter; hence, it may suit applications that involve a high-voltage boosting gain. The proposed modulation strategy is based on the discontinuous pulse-width modulation strategy of the neutral-point clamped inverter. It guarantees an improved current and voltage profile at the output and ensures a high-voltage gain by decoupling control for the shoot-through duty ratio and the modulation index. The effectiveness of the proposed modulation strategy is tested through an intensive simulation. Experimental tests, carried out on the digital development board, demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed control.
