Abstract
A general protocol is proposed to minimize the likelihood of laser injury accidents. Some accidents are analyzed to show that, had this protocol been followed in the particular cases, the accidents would not have happened. The protocol applies to both the laser product manufacturer and to the laboratory where “open beam” optical systems are being developed. The use of protective eyewear for primary protection is discouraged for the visible wavelengths. The limitations of the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) are discussed, and a new form of SOP is proposed which supports this protocol.A general protocol is proposed to minimize the likelihood of laser injury accidents.
