Abstract
Why did [Deng] Xiaoping take a fancy to Zhu Rongji? Because Zhu knows economics. Why was Zhu Rongji made premier? Because he knows economics. Of the present leaders in the Chinese Communist Party's (CCPs) Central Committee, Zhu Rongji is known both in China and abroad for his knowledge of economics. One might well say that Zhu Rongji would not be where he is today if he did not know economics. However, is today's Zhu Rongji as filled with enthusiasm and vigor as he was when elected premier in March 1998? How much real power, after all, does he possess?
