Abstract

Saturday, May 8, 1999, a day for leisure and relaxation. Zhu Rongji said later, "I never thought that anything out of the ordinary would happen on this day." However, before seven in the morning, the confidential phone at Zhu Rongji's residence rang and the General Office of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Central Committee reported that, approximately one hour earlier, U.S.-led North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) had attacked our embassy in Yugoslavia with guided missiles, causing casualties among its personnel and severely damaging the embassy premises! This was a thunderclap of earthshaking proportions—more so than even that produced by the Falungong incident! The duty office notified Zhu to participate in a Politburo meeting for discussing countermeasures.
