Abstract
This article presents the career of Charles Carroll of Carrollton (1737–1832) as a template for Catholic political action in a modern, secularized society. Carroll’s Jesuit formation explains his commitment to politics as a science of the practical reason, providing a good example for contemporary Catholics who must engage in dialogue in order to restore the United States’ foundational political ideas, supposedly based on Enlightenment thought, to their original Catholic meanings.
