Abstract

This chapter analyses the impact of the 2013 elections on the institutional reform debate in Italian politics in the context of a thirty year failure to secure what are regarded as essential reforms. The first part of the chapter summarises this long-term failure. The second part charts the failure to achieve institutional reform under the Letta government which took office after the 2013 elections, and then summarises the progress made by the Renzi government in its first six months. The final part assesses the reasons for the Letta failure and the prospects for Renzi succeeding today.
