Abstract
Based on an empirical analytical study conducted in a biology laboratory, the article investigates the construction of scientific knowledge in the process of toxoplasma DNA extraction. It accompanies all stages in the construction of this knowledge, from selection of humans through their transformation into numbers. Latour's concept of circulating reference, along with the concepts Hacking employs to explain the construction of the objects of science and of ideas, marks, and things, are vital to understanding this shift from human to number. The present study hopes to stimulate a more critical attitude towards the construction of the objects of science. It also stresses that it would be problematic to use numbers or marks as our sole references in health interventions.

Summary
O desenvolvimento da bacteriologia propiciou uma transformação radical do conhecimento médico e da medicina nos séculos XIX e XX, principalmente pela aliança entre as ciências de laboratório (química, histologia, bacteriologia) e a ‘medicina de beira do leito’ (Löwy, 1994). Abrir essa caixa-preta foi uma das motivações deste estudo, que objetivou investigar a construção do conhecimento científico no círculo esotérico (Fleck, 1979)[3], isto é, numa pesquisa no campo da genética e relacionada à infecção/doença toxoplasmose.[4] Foi um estudo de natureza empírico-analítica, no qual foram acompanhadas as etapas de extração do DNA num laboratório[5] de biologia, desde o momento inicial da seleção dos voluntários humanos, passando pela coleta de seu sangue até a etapa do PCR, com a produção de marcas e números.
