Abstract

BackgroundThis project assessed a nurse practitioner (NP)-led consultation service in neuro-oncology at an academic medical center. MethodsA 6-month pilot was implemented. Referring providers rated the NP consultant’s skill with a posttest survey. The number of monthly referrals and clinic visits were compared with the 6 months preintervention. Salary comparison and billing charges highlighted relative value unit (RVU) productivity and cost-avoidance. ResultsTen responses yielded an 80%–90% agree/strongly agree rating in support of the NP-led model. Referrals were sustained; RVU productivity and clinic follow-up increased. ConclusionThe NP-led model generated value, provided skillful consultations, and maintained referrals while increasing clinic follow-up.
