Abstract

High-rate crack growth in double cantilever beam ( DCB ) specimens is investigated using the finite element method. The quasi-static solution of energy release rates G , based on beam theory, is given for various loading conditions and compared with the finite element solutions. Strong dynamic effects are observed as a result of stress wave reflections within finite size specimens. The wave effect on G values is discussed.
