Abstract

ABSTRACTA novel strain sensor was proposed by splicing a dual‐core photonic crystal fiber (DC‐PCF) with two single‐mode fibers. Owning to the mode index difference between the two fiber cores of DC‐PCF, a Mach‐Zehnder interferometer (MZI) pattern was achieved and its transmission spectrum is sensitive to the microstress of the DC‐PCF. We analyze the stress characteristics of the fiber sensor with different lengths of DC‐PCF. It shows that transmission spectrum pattern of the MZI shifts to the long wavelength with a sensitivity about 1.4pm/µε (for a 2‐cm DC‐PCF) and 1.9pm/µε (for a 4‐cm DC‐PCF) under an axial microstress. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
