Abstract

Many investigators in the field have used various designs of liquid nitrogen cooled cryosorption pumps using molecular sieve as a sorbent for obtaining high and ultra high vacua. The authors describe yet another type of sorption pump of cylindrical structure and its various characteristics with different gases. The sorbent used in the pump is molecular sieve 5A-1/8'' pellets. In a two stage pumping system pumped down from atmosphere, ultimate pressure of 10-7 Torr can be routinely achieved in a 2 litre volume. Various methods for obtaining low pressures are discussed. Residual gas analysis of a sorption pumped system is studied, with a quadrupole analyser.
