Abstract

A simple semi-empirical formula for calculating the electronic stopping power for low energy heavy ions has been obtained using a screened Coulomb potential on the basis of a Thomas-Fermi model of atoms. Main features of the formula are the asymmetry and the mutual independency with respect to the atomic numbers of incident ion Z 1 and target atom Z 2 . By adjusting two parameters concerning charge state of the projectile and degree of ionization of atomic electrons in the target by the collision, the formula is able to fit available experimental data to within ∼10 to 20% between the energy range 5 to 30 KeV/amu.
