Abstract
The stopping power ( dE dx ) of ions in liquids plays an important role for the proper development of the superheated drop detector, which uses drop vaporization by sufficiently energetic ions. In the absence of a universally valid simple formula to estimate ( dE dx ) for any projectile-target combination especially at intermediate energies, we develop a reasonably simple semi-empirical formula that allows for the calculation of the stopping power of ions in the intermediate energy range. The formula has been developed for ions and target materials used in neutron detectors composed of superheated drops in a gel, although the formula should be useful for other targets and ions in the intermediate energy range.
