Abstract
An approximate method is developed for the study of radiative transfer in non-planar systems. The method may be regarded as an extension of the moment method employed by Eddington for the radiative transfer in a planar medium, and is analogous to Lees' moment method in rarefied gas dynamics. The basic concept consists of dividing the radiation field into several solid-angle subregions depending on the geometry of the system, and approximating the moments of the radiation intensity in each subregion by their mean values. One distinctive feature of the method is the close interplay between the approximate moment equations and the system geometry, and this is particularly attractive for non-planar geometries. The approximate solutions for concentric spheres and cylinders have been found to agree well with existing numerical solution throughout the entire range of optical thickness.
