Abstract

A mixture model for wet bones is given in this paper. In developing the theory, it is assumed that a wet bone is mainly composed of electrolytes, bone salts and the solid matrix bone which has the piezoelectric property. Based on the fact that the electrical conductance and calcification in the wet bones are, in turn, due to monovalent ions (Na, Cl, HCO 3) and mass transfer evolving between the piezoelectric matrix bone and the bone salts (Ca 3, (PO 4) 2), the governing balance equations and the constitutive relations (both nonlinear and linear) of wet bones are derived and various special cases are discussed.
